Purlins as shown in sample photos below are installed for rafter support.

If you see sagging rafters recommend stabilization by a qualified contractor. Hip rafters are simply called hips and are shown here as brown. Purlins support the loads from the roof deck or sheathing and are supported by the principal rafters and or the building walls steel beams etc. Stabilization typically involves installation of a purlin system.

The purlins are supported by vertical or slightly angled bracing. Hip roofs have hip rafters which are oriented diagonally to the ridge and outside walls. All angles can be found on the chappell univer.
